Even as India and Pakistan fought it out in the cricket grounds of Mohali, social networking site Twitter was abuzz about another clash, the one between actress Gul Panag and author Chetan Bhagat.

It began with the 'Two States' writer cracking a joke about Panag's name, tweeting, "If gulpanag had married umar gul (Pakistani cricketer), wud her name become gul gul? (sic)."

Panag, who recently married childhood friend, Rishi Attari, a pilot, shot back saying, "At least you are expected to be more original than that." She then re-tweeted a comment made by one of her followers who wrote to Bhagat, "Such an old and boring joke!"

Shiney held guilty, gets 7 years of jail for raping maid

Shiney sentenced to seven years in jail

Shiney Ahuja has been convicted of raping his maid and has been sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment. The verdict was delivered by the fast-track sessions court in Sewri yesterday.

An eyewitness says the actor broke down when he heard the verdict. Shiney can appeal in the High Court. He was accompanied by his wife Anupam in the court.

WHAT THEY SAY...

Most of Shiney Ahuja's co-stars and directors preferred not to comment about the actor's sentence. While they refrained from saying anything, a few put forth their thoughts

Mahesh Bhatt (Shiney acted in his productions like Gangster and Woh Lamhe): "His worst nightmare seems to be coming true. When it was alleged that he might have done it, there was a divided house.

Some thought maybe he was framed and he may come out clean. Alas! It has not happened despite the maid retracting her statement.

It's a moment of grief for everyone close to him. This verdict seems to change the notion that vulnerable and poor people don't get justice in India.

It is said that the maid was influenced to retract her statement. At the same time, let's be fair to Shiney.

We should not judge him till the time he moves to higher court. A lot of times, the verdicts have been changed."

Chitrangada Singh (acted with Shiney in Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi and Kal: Yesterday and Tomorrow): "I only feel that the law is just as harsh and quick for the Kalamadis and Mayawatis of this country. Hope it's not an exceptional decision."

Dutts stung by Kangna's words

Kangna Ranaut is no longer a welcome guest at Sanjay Dutt residence

Kangna Ranaut and the Dutts have drifted apart. The actress has been telling friends that she doesn't consider Sanjay and Maanayata family.

A friend of the Dutts confirms, "Reports of her distancing herself from the couple have disturbed them. And whatever she is saying about them has come as a rude shock to them.

They won't be inviting her to their home anymore. In any case, she had never been as close to them as she claimed. It was always Ameesha Patel who was Maana's close friend."

The fact that the Dutts did not attend Kangna's birthday bash recently was a clear-cut message. The source reveals, "An extremely upset Kangna kept calling Maana till midnight."

The Dutts' friend adds that Maana helped the actress with everything from paying less for a flat in Bandra to arranging a trip for her.

Yet, Kangna hasn't even gone to meet Maanayata or her babies even once. She attends the Dutts' public functions as it suits her to be seen with them when the media is around.

Maanayata wasn't even invited to her Tanu Weds Manu trial. The first time they met in months was on the sets of Rascals recently."

Role calling

The friend feels that the actress grew close to them as she knew the actor was launching Sanjay Dutt Productions and wanted to star in his projects.

"She signed Rascals opposite Sanju and Ajay Devgn which led to more A-grade films in her kitty. She considers Rascals as her big ticket."

The Dutts and Kangna remained unavailable for comment.

The common link
Sanjay Dutt and Kangna Ranaut share the same business manager Dharam Oberoi (who's also CEO of Sanjay Dutt Production). "Dharam is upset by Kangna's statements. He's in Hong Kong with Dutt, who's shooting for Dhamaal 2. He feels miserable and tells people it was a mistake taking on Kangna's work. He has told people that his allegiance is to Sanju."

Hailee Steinfeld could be new Sleeping Beauty

Hailee Steinfeld isn’t going anywhere – but up, that is. Fresh from her True Grit Oscar nomination, she’s up for the lead role in a new Sleeping Beauty movie.

While it seems to be a trend in Hollywood at the moment to update fairytales (we have Tim Burton’s phenomenally successful Alice In Wonderland to thank for that), this one sounds like anything but a snore.

Scripted by Lindsay Devlin, it follows the story we all know from Aurora’s point of view, as she fights to get herself out of a nightmarish dream world.

The script is currently out to buyers, with Steinfeld attached. Time will tell if any studio takes the bait, but with Steinfeld a hot property right now, they'd be stupid not to.

Other fairytale updates on the go include two Snow White projects (one starring Kristen Stewart, the other Julia Roberts), Jeremy Renner’s Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, and various Wizard Of Oz and Peter Pan projects.

Expect half of them to end up in the bargain bucket at Blockbuster.

Good News for Lindsay

Lindsay Lohan has every reason to smile right now.

Turns out she will not be charged with battery for allegedly attacking staff member Dawn Holland during her stint at the Betty Ford Center.

Back in December, Holland
reportedly told police that the 24-year-old shoved her and grabbed a telephone
from her hand but then ultimately decided not to press charges.

Lohan is now officially off
the hook after prosecutors announced that there was insufficient evidence to
charge her with the crime.

With that out of the way,
now the Mean Girl can
focus on the felony theft case she’s contending regarding the $2,500 necklace
she’s been accused of stealing from a Venice, California jewelry store.

One down…one more to go

Courteney Cox & Handsome Co-Star Enjoy Family Beach Vacation

Courteney Cox‘s family day at the beach was ruined on Tuesday when her fancy beach resort was hit with a sudden rainstorm.

The Cougar Town actress is currently vacationing in St. Barts with her co-star Josh Hopkins and her young daughter Coco. Courteney and Josh were spotted splashing in the waves with Coco before the storm forced the threesome to take shelter somewhere else. It sure looks like this trio is one happy family!

Courteney split from her husband of 11 years, David Arquette, in October. Courteney, 46, was rumored to be dating co-star Brian van Holt but he was not spotted on her family beach vacation.

Batman to be rebooted after The Dark Knight Rises

Chris Nolan wasn’t kidding when he said that The Dark Knight Rises would be his last Batman film.

Warner Bros have revealed that after Nolan closes up shop on his Batman trilogy, they will be rebooting the character completely ahead of their proposed Justice League movie.

“We have the third Batman, but then we’ll have to reinvent Batman…” says WB president Jeff Robinov. “Chris Nolan and [producing partner and wife] Emma Thomas will be producing it, so it will be a conversation with them about what the next phase is.”

Whether that means the WB will jump straight into a new Batman film, or re-launch him with the Justice League movie, remains to be seen.

But to reboot Batman on-screen for the third time in 30 years is surely going to result in serious audience fatigue – especially if they insist on retelling Bruce Wayne’s origins story all over again.

The singer, whose seventh album Femme Fatale is officially out, announced that she was hitting the road this summer
during a pre-taped appearance on Good Morning America, and in an interview backstage dished that she was
bringing Enrique Iglesias with her.

After catching a glimpse of this performance – we can’t wait for her to hit the road
one more time.

And with Enrique warming up the stage…it’s sure to be one spicy night.

Ashley Greene A Role Model After Nude Leak?

For the May editions of the magazine, there will be additional covers from Emma Stone and another from Freida Pinto of Slumdog Millionaire. All of the covers have a Spring-appropriate coloured retro theme, but Stone is the only one whose panties aren’t showing. There are some interview snippets below from Greene, in which she pretends to be a role model because, ‘There are younger girls who look up to me,’ totally ignoring the naked pictures she took of herself that leaked in 2009; setting the best example, pre-Teen Mom. To be honest, it’s more entertaining to stare at the Magic Eye bikini bottoms, that two of the girls are wearing, to see if you can spot the pirate ship (the new Pirates Of The Caribbean movie poster can be seen in Green’s crotch, if you just stare hard enough).

* Ashley Greene on how she avoids the pitfalls of the Hollywood party scene: ‘I keep to the ground rules. I’m not going to get drunk at a bar. There are younger girls who look up to me. So I do my best not to stray too far.’
* Greene on misguided career goals: ‘I started in modeling. [At first] I wanted to be a lawyer. I realized I don’t really want to be a lawyer. I want to play a lawyer. Thank God I figured that out.’
* Greene on her career, post-Twilight: ‘It is difficult because people look at you as that character. I want to play a role of a 24-year-old woman, not 17-year-old girls. So I have picked a couple of films like Butter to show that. And it’s perfectly fine not to do anything for a year if I don’t find the right thing.’
* Greene on how everything is fate: ‘I’m a big believer in ‘everything happens for a reason.’ I’m not saying it wasn’t hard. I lived off Lean Cuisine and had no furniture and shared a bedroom with a girl for a year. I ran up my credit card. But every time I thought, I’m [not] going to fail; something happened that kept me here.’

Bipasha helped me a lot: Rana Daggubati

Southern actor Rana Daggubati, who is paired with Bipasha Basu in his Bollywood debut "Dum Maaro Dum", is not dating his co-star but praises her for making him comfortable on the sets of the crime thriller.

The film, which also stars Abhishek Bachchan and Prateik Babbar, is releasing April 22.

"Being a newcomer in Bollywood, I had initial jitters, but I must say my co-stars - Bipasha and Abhishek - really helped me to pull it off. Bipasha helped me a lot and took care of my comfort during shoots," Daggubati told IANS.

"I have known Abhishek even before we started working together for the film," he added.

Directed by Rohan Sippy, the film revolves around the lives of six people who meet in Goa and how their lives change once they are dragged into the drug mafia world.

The 25-year-old plays a musician in "Dum Maaro Dum".

"I play a Goan disc jockey. My character is very laid back and does not worry about anything. But he gets trapped in a dirty circle," he said.

Daggubati, grandson of veteran Telugu film actor-producer D. Ramanaidu and son of producer D. Suresh Babu, had to work on accent.

"For the character, I had to do a lot of prepartaion - starting from body language to the typical Hindi accent. I also took guitar lessons. But diction training took most of the time," he said.

"I had to get rid of my Hyderabadi Hindi and learn Goan Hindi. It wasn't easy because these two kinds of Hindi were mutually incompatible. I had to unlearn one kind of Hindi and then learn a new kind. Since I was brought up in Chennai, I speak fluent Tamil and Telugu," he added.

When asked what prompted him to make his debut with Rohan Sippy's film, he said: "I knew I could never get an opportunity to do this kind of role due to regional boundaries. The role and the script were a bigger excitement for me to grow as an actor."

The actor who made his debut in 2010 with Telugu movie "Leader", an intense political drama, says the shooting in Goa was more like a vacation.

"Nothing can be better than enjoying your work. Even while we were shooting, it seemed as if we were all out for a vacation. Beautiful Goa, laid back attitude, fun and excitement made work so much enjoyable."

Daggubati is busy promoting "Dum Maaro Dum" and is equally excited about his Telugu film "Nenu Na Rakshasi" which will release April 29.

Monica

Cast: Divya Dutta, Ashutosh Rana, Dadhi Pandey, Rajit Kapur

Writer-Director: Sushen Bhatnagar

Rating: ***

One doesn't know if the real-life journalist Shivani Bhatnagar was meant to be a kind of promiscuous enigma. But that's how she is purported to be portrayed by writer-director Sushen Bhatnagar. A kind of Madame Bovary (a novel by French writer Gustave Flaubert) of the fringe world.

A cryptic woman and a mystery to others and to herself whose story is pieced together after her death through the wonderfully nimble vision of the movie camera.

Alas, the camera, contrary to belief, does lie quite often.

In this interesting though flawed film about a deeply flawed woman who knows not what her body or mind wants, director Sushen Bhatnagar takes a real-life incident from the newspapers and converts it into a well-meaning cinematic treatise. It's done with much restraint but not enough of a grip to keep the slippery characters from slipping off the story board.

Frequently the characters appear on screen with very little to recommend them as mere human beings or even as flawed character-studies.

Bhatnagar's world of politicians and media persons in and around Lucknow and Delhi appears to be colonised by self-serving stereotypes, trying hard to appear subtle in their devious machinations. Failing in that endeavour, they appear more sinful than sinned against.

Frequently in the course of the narration we feel the characters are being let down more by a lack of creative and financial resources than by destiny.

The saga of the small-town girl's ambitious rise from salwar-kameez to skimpy skirts and tops has been done with far more grace in the past. Madhur Bhandarkar's "Fashion" created both the fury and passion of that journey into a hurling doom that small-town girls often undertake in implementing their big-time dreams.

Monica Jaitley, as played by Divya Dutta, comes across as a vulnerable vixen. Manipulated and manipulative Monica epitomises the strenuous gracelessness of over-pushy small-towners who topple over the brink in their pursuit of the designer-dream.

The nexus between Monica's world of journalism and the murkier milieu of politics and politicians, as represented by Ashutosh Rana's quietly conniving character, doesn't quite become the heady mix of art and 'vulture' that such cinema has often become in the past (in Ramesh Sharma's "New Delhi" and Rajkumar Gupta's "No One Killed Jessica").

The edges in this hard-hitting story of sex and politics are raw and uneven. The tone doesn't quite catch on the immediacy and urgency required of a docu-drama. The narrative pace sometimes slackens to a slow trot taking away considerably from the why-dunnit's cutting edge.

But the effort to recreate the life of a journalist who dared to dream is sincere. Monica is the kind of won't-tell-a-lie cinema that gets trapped in the labyrinth which separates the search for the truth from the truth itself. But the film does create an aura of doomed sensuality around the protagonist without resorting to lengthy cheesy shots of her journey into the bedroom.

The dialogues suggest deeper thrusts of anguish in Monica's life than the ones that she was apparently resorting to for self-enhancement. At the end one isn't sure what killed Monica - her ambitions or their inherently absurd nature.

For being able to bring out the contradictions in Monica Jaitley's personality, this film deserves some words of praise. The performances of Divya and Ashutosh are tuned well to the theme. But the gifted Rajit as Divya's reprehensible husband is uncharacteristically hammy.

The rest of the cast is stiff, self-conscious and unremarkable.

The authentic locations add a hue of familiar discomfort to the film's politics of sexuality. With better production values and more space for the characters to breed credibility, this could've been a remarkable political thriller rather than a film that gets lost in a maze of possibilities.

Nonetheless worth a watch for recreating an event from the proximate past that showed how closely and precariously politics is related to journalism. And sex.

Life Goes On

By Subhash K Jha

Starring Sharmila Tagore, Girish Karnad, Om Puri, Soha Ali Khan, Mukulika Banerjee, Neerja Naik, Rez Kempton

Written & Directed by Sangeeta Dutta

Rating: ****

One of the many pleasures of watching this supple evocative elegiac family saga is to see the timeless Sharmila Tagore share screen space with her real-life daughter Soha, who by the way, has never looked lovelier.

That inner-glow comes from the company she keeps in this gentle drama suffused in melodious whispers and mellifluent suggestions of tunes long-forgotten and yet stored in the most inviolable chambers of the heart.

Luckily for us, and the film, the Sharmila-Soha togetherness is not harped upon. There are far bigger issues and virtues to do with family ties and cultural disaffectation, secreted in the storytelling, propelling our hearts to soar in ways that modern cinema doesn't allow.

When did Indian cinema cease to be about emotions? You wonder as you watch the silken cascade of debutante director Sangeeta Dutta's family secrets and emotions gush out in an Bengali family in London, when one fine morning the mother simply drops dead on the kitchen floor.

The mother-figure, a constant and non-negotiable pivot of every family, here seems to be much more in demand than usual. All her three daughters seem to be stricken with heart problems that no cardiologist can tackle. Blessedly the mother of the family Manju is played by the gloriously imposing Sharmila Tagore. She looks like a woman who can handle the problems of three demanding extra-sensitive daughters, and then some more.

Life Goes On captures the suddenness of bereavement in snatches of sounds, visuals and dialogues done in hurried snatches. There's far more austerity in the expression of the anguish and despair after the sudden bereavement than in Mira Nair's masterly study of coming to terms with death in The Namesake. At times you long for more time between the members of the grieving family.

There are no big breakdown sequences in Life Goes On after the mother's death. Everyone gets busy with trying to pick up the threads of life through the guiding-signs of recollective silence and dialogues. Everyone is a bit selfish in this family. That's the family secret that the film doesn't get judgemental about.

A lot of the vignettes connecting the mother's memories to the present times appear predictable even pedestrian…The director, fearless in her maiden endeavour, does not shy away from making her film look familiar. In doing so she creates a comfort zone between the audience and the characters' collective and individual grief.

From the death to reconciliation, Life Goes On moves at a gentle pace creating pockets of interesting if unfinished dialogue and emotions between characters whom the dead woman touched and influenced infinitely.

The echoes and resonances of a life that lingers after death is created through a blend of sounds and visuals capturing the feeble but flamboyant light of London at dawn and dusk. The parks, bridges, two-storeyed residential areas and their incriminating quietude are ably captured in the film, as are the pain and postures of grief and mourning.

The Rabindra Sangeet in the original Bengali and a rather quaint Hindi translation suffuse a warm and endearing quality to the proceedings. The cross-cultural references resonate across the film's somber skyline with unobtrusive emphasis.

The film creates a fine balance between real-life elegies and their cinematic rendition. A lot of Sangeeta Dutta's mise en scene project a first-time director's effusive affinity to creating a defiant poetry out of the prosaic rhythms of life. But the selfconsciousness of a debutante never distracts from the film's elegantly laid-out pastiche of pain hurt and their healing…if at all the pain of loss ever goes away.

Life for the Indian Bengali family in Britain never seemed more complex.

At times you feel the director has 'Britain' more than she can chew. The sub-plot, on Islam-phobia brought in through Soha's boyfriend's character Imtiaz (Rez Kempton) and the rock band that Imtiaz and his friends put together despite Mullahs' objections, seems to go off into tangent away from the Bengali's family's bereavement.

But at the end when we see the band playing a punk version of Hemant Kumar's Ganga aaye kahan se laced with a French rap section, you smile for the cultural shifts and translocations that the plot endeavours to establish without falling off the map of the human heart.

The performances by the veterans Girish Karnad, Om Puri and Sharmila Tagore are uniformly skilled and supple. Among the younger cast members Soha Ali Khan as the youngest Cordelia-like daughter to Karnad's King Lear emerges strong and yet vulnerable. But it is the unknown young actress Neerja Naik who plays Soha's lesbian sister who proves a complete natural.

The subtle delicate tender and utterly disarming play of light and shade, of mellow memories and the hard present-reality, of the various cultural cross-generation clashes…. all these could have made any film topheavy. Not Life Goes On.

It is a gloriously polished and poised look at the chaos that rules the bereaved heart in our troubled times. This film is a triumph on many levels and layers. And you don't have to be a Sharmila Tagore fan to realize how resonant her presence can be even when she is lost to the plot.
