Carell & Knightley An Odd Match In Romantic Roadtrip Comedy

Steve Carell and Kiera Knightley are set to play unlikely roadtrip pals in the funnyman's first post-the Office film role.

The pair will play neighbours on a trip to meet Carell's childhood sweetheart in the hours before an asteroid wipes out the planet.

Carell's character makes contact with his ex-love after his wife leaves him in Seeking a Friend at the End of the World, and Brit Knightley agrees to accompany him on his romantic odyssey.

Carell will officially exit TV sitcom The Office after a seven-year run on 28 April.

Steve Carell and Keira Knightley face The End Of The World

It might just be the most bizarre movie coupling of all time: Steve Carell and Keira Knightley are to star in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.

With Carell on his way out of The Office, it was only a matter of time before the deluge of offers came flooding in - and this looks like a promising start.

Set against the final days of mankind's existence, the film sees Carell's character driving across the States to spend his precious last moments with his high school sweetheart.

Knightly, on the other hand, will play Carell's neighbour and road companion. But as the wacky hand of fate would have it, the unlikely pair end up falling for each other instead.

We have to admit we're a teeny bit intrigued - this marks the directorial debut of Lorraine Scafaria, whose script for Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist garnered a fair bit of praise.

And with production kicking off June, those of you abiding by the Mayan calender can at least be assured that we'll be seeing this before too long.
