The identity of Vancouver’s famous kissing couple is revealed

In the age of Facebook and Twitter, it was only a matter of time before the world learned the identities of the kissing couple from that now-iconic photo of the Vancouver riots.

About 24 hours after photos of the smooch was passed on through emails, IMs and blog posts, the Toronto Star and the CBC are reporting that the boyfriend and girlfriend in the photograph are Aussie bartender Scott Jones and Canadian college student Alex Thomas, who was injured just before the picture was taken.

The papers report that Jones and Thomas have been dating since Jones arrived in Vancouver on a "working holiday." They attended Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, which the hometown Canucks lost 4-0 to the Boston Bruins, and then somehow found themselves between the angry rioters and charging riot police later that night in downtown Vancouver.
So how were Jones and Thomas ultimately identified as the unlikely "make love, not war" couple of Vancouver's embarrassing night of injury and destruction?

It probably won't surprise you to learn that Facebook was involved.

Though Scott's sister Hannah first identified her brother to an Australian news network, things really started taking off when Brett Jones, Scott's father, posted the following update on his Facebook profile on Friday morning from the family's home in Perth, Australia.
Brett Jones now says the couple is being besieged by media requests from outlets around the world. All, of course, are interested in knowing the circumstances that found the couple smooching as cars were burned and windows were smashed around them.

But despite some of our initial assumptions, the kiss seen 'round the world wasn't the product of a riot-fueled, uncontrollable passion. Brett Jones instead notes that Thomas was injured and his son was coming to her aid. An alternate angle taken from above shows other bystanders later attempting to help Thomas and Jones.

Combine that different angle with Brett Jones' story and it certainly dispels the rumors that the couple had intentionally staged the photo.

"They were between the riot police and the rioters, and the riot police were actually charging forward, and Alex got knocked by a [police] shield and fell to the ground," Brett Jones told CBC News. "[Scott] was comforting her and gave her a kiss to say, 'It's going to be OK,' and the photographer just took the shot at that moment."

Jones' mother Marie said she immediately knew it was her son in the picture because "he doesn't have a lot of clothes with him and he always puts on the same thing."

So where do they go from here? The good news is that Jones escaped the incident unhurt and Thomas only suffered a bruised leg. The bad news is that Jones is scheduled to leave Canada soon and head home for Australia after a trip to California. The Jones family says that Thomas plans to visit California with their son but that the couple's future after that is uncertain.

Cameron Diaz Is Wearing A Nude Bathing Suit

Cameron Diaz covers British Cosmopolitan July 2011. If the cover below looks familiar, it’s because it’s a copy of the June American Cosmopolitan cover. Because we like sidetidday too, I guess. Which is news to me as it’s pretty unusual to see that much tit on a British cover. But it was that, or spend precious FarmVille money shooting another. And we can’t have that. Diaz’s interview and her shoot are below. It’s pretty much a C&P, but I didn’t notice the bathing suit photo before. Girl’s got killer legs. And this time I don’t think they’ve been stretched in MS Paint. This is either quality Photoshop of the loving handiwork of Mother Nature. In her interview, from before she split from Alex Rodriguez, the 38-year-old talks about why she doesn’t need to get married, nor be a mother, to be happy (I co-sign the s**t out of her comments about not marrying if you’re a free spirit and not having a bunch of babies because of societal pressure).

* On her view of marriage: ‘Marriage hasn’t been important to me. I believe we are with who we’re supposed to be when we’re supposed to be with them. If I try and lock something down, I miss out on all the possibilities of what it could be.
* On whether she wants children: ‘You can’t have a child just because you think it’s something you’re supposed to do. It doesn’t make sense for everyone it’s not an absolute for me… I don’t care what other people think. It’s my life; I live it the way I want to.’
* On ageing in Hollywood as asked of everyone over the age off 25 who’s female: ‘You get better as you age. You know what you want and you become stronger, mentally and physically. Things have happened recently that have pushed me to grow. My father died and going through that made me think about how I want to live my life.’

Movie Reviews: X-men: First Class

Critics have rarely had anything positive to say about installments of the X-Men franchise, but they’re fairly approving of the latest one. X-Men: First Class, writes Ann Hornaday in the Washington Post, “happily delivers on the escapism and rich narrative texture the best of its predecessors have promised. With action, atmosphere and mixed feelings to burn … it seems well on its way to giving the well-traveled X-Men franchise a resuscitating breath of genetically superior, nuclear-powered life.” Elizabeth Weitzman in the New York Daily News says it’s the “kind of movie that goes great with extra butter.” She adds;”It’s big, bright, savvy, and so expansive you’ll undoubtedly leave feeling you got your money’s worth.” It “isn’t a masterpiece” Joe Morgenstern sums up in the Wall Street Journal, “but it’s summer entertainment of a very high grade that leaves you with an appetite for more of the same.” Several critics simply give the movie a C grade — “moderately engrossing,” Michael Phillips calls it in the Chicago Tribune — and all suggest it’s a major improvement over the last X-Men edition. But Betsy Sharkey of the Los Angeles Times is unimpressed. “It would take a brain far more telepathically powerful than that of Professor X to untangle what went wrong with X-Men: First Class,” she writes, “but misplaced and misplayed ambition, to say nothing of a massive misspent budget, comes to my nonmutant mind.

Movie Review -Submarine

Opening in limited release, the British coming-of-age film Submarine is being hailed by some critics as the emergence of a talented new writer director, Richard Ayoade. Los Angeles Times critic Kenneth Turan calls him a “fresh and inventive cinematic voice” who has taken a familiar subject and “makes us feel like it’s never been told before.” The result, Turan concludes, is a film filled with such “cinematic verve that the biggest compliment you can pay it is to say that it must be experienced to be fully appreciated.” A.O. Scott in the New York Times has a similar reaction. “This is the kind of story,” he writes, “that we have already seen dozens of times. But Mr Ayoade’s keen visual wit and clever, knowing touches keep it surprising and nimble.” Kyle Smith in the New York Post is equally charmed by Submarine. “The excruciating and the hilarious mingle nearly to perfection in this marvelously visualized and deeply felt British film,” he writes. David Germain of the Associated Press says that the movie is “a joy to watch.” Ayoade, he writes, delivers “a film that’s fresh and funny but has some real bite.” Not so impressed, however, is Rex Reed of the New York Observer who regards the film as “sporadically amusing but ultimately inconsequential … a fitful homage to far superior and vastly more imaginative films about dysfunctional kids.

The William & Kate Vanity Fair Cover Released

Vanity Fair has already released the July 2011 cover that features a never-before-seen engagement photo of the British royal couple, as taken in November/ December. The cover was taken by Mario Testino, as was the July 1997 Princess Diana cover taken by Testino 14-years ago. I can see why they didn’t use this photo before the wedding and why they left it out of the wedding’s promotional material. It’s nothing like as nice as the other engagement photos. It’s dark, oddly-composed and unflattering. It shows the sides of the couple’s faces and distorts their otherwise good-looking features. Along with the cover, Vanity Fair has posted an excerpt from the article. ‘Despite Will and Kate’s new official titles, duke and duchess, respectively, [William] made it clear at the wedding that he will continue to be addressed as Prince William, meaning Kate by default will be Princess Catherine, reports Vanity Fair writer Katie Nicholl. This may rattle some family hierarchies; the Countess of Wessex had wanted to be known as Princess Sophie, but had been forbidden by the Queen. The newest royal couple grace the July issue cover, with an exclusive portrait series by Mario Testino. The issue hits newsstands in New York and L.A. on Thursday, June 2, and nationally, in print and on the iPad, on Tuesday, June 7.’ Yeah, so it’s going to be out earlier than I’d expected but I guess it’s a normal July release date.

Testino has given an interview about photographing the couple to Nicholl, who also writes for The UK’s Mail On Sunday. Testino felt ‘very confident,’ photographing Kate Middleton, because of her natural grace. Asked why he’d been chose to take the photographs, he replied, ‘I guess it was a way for them to keep William’s mother in the whole process of it.’ Testino said that the couple exuded ‘sheer happiness,’ before adding, ‘They are a young couple in love.’

Miley Cyrus Is A Completely Amazing Actress

I think I can see Miley Cyrus’ nipples through that shirt. I think it’s okay to point that out now, just, legally, but I still feel like pointing out nipples under lace is going to get me body-slammed into a little swivel chair. In any case, because you know you love these, here are stills from Cyrus’ latest movie. It’s a movie about which I don’t care, in all honesty. But she seems to be in her bra and short shorts a bunch. So I’ll allow it. In one particular scene from So Undercover, the 18-year-old is at a pyjama party from a 70′s porno. You can’t see this, but off-screen is some dude with a pornstache making the ‘Bow-chica-WOW-WOW’ noises with his mouth (instrumental soundtracks are for amateurs). I don’t think this is released until October, but clips will leak before then. So you won’t have to keep clicking right, left, right in Windows Picture Viewer to get the effect of her moving around. More photos below. And even when she’s clothed, she’s not.

3D Lion King Coming In September

Disney is the latest studio to announce plans to release one of its classic films in 3D. Its 1994 hit The Lion King is scheduled to return to theaters on September 16 for a two-week run in 3D. A 3D Blu-ray version will then go on sale at video retailers on October 15 The studio said on Wednesday that the movie already is the best-selling home entertainment release of all time, not including two direct-to-video sequels, The Lion King 1 1/2 and The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride.” While Toy Story and Toy Story 2 were successfully released in 3D last year, those films were produced on computers originally, and it is far easier to convert them to 3D than hand-drawn animated fare like The Lion King.

White Felt Healed After Sex Abuse Admission

Model Jessica White is glad she told the world about the sexual abuse she suffered as a child because the admission made her feel "healed".

The catwalk beauty stunned the audience at a gala for her Angel Wings Foundation in New York on Sunday by revealing she had suffered abuse when she was a youngster.

White reveals she didn't plan to make the public announcement at the charity dinner, but is glad her secret is now out.

She tells New York Post gossip colum Page Six, "I wanted the world to know. It just came out, and I realised, standing there, that I was healed."

White has vowed to make it her "mission in life" to help other victims of sexual abuse and is teaming up with actress Gabrielle Union, who was raped as a teenager, to launch an online campaign to help other women who have endured similar experiences.

She tells E! Online, "This is my mission in life, I've actually lived it... I'm teaming up with other women and teenagers and we're gonna do a YouTube campaign, along with Gabrielle (Union) who also was sexually abused. We're all partnering together, and we're fighting to stop this altogether."

Winslet strips for new Testino exhibit Share 0diggsdigg

The actress, who honoured her close pal with a lifetime achievement award in New York last week (26May11), is no stranger to posing nude for movies and photoshoots and admits she couldn't say no to Testino when he approached her to feature in upcoming art show, Todo o Nada.

She says, "You know that his biggest strength without fail is making women look beautiful. When Mario turns to you and says, 'It's beautiful, but I think it would work better naked, no?' How can one refuse?

"No matter what insecurities about oneself a subject may have, Mario makes them go away like a magician. One moment you are in the hair and make-up chair fully clothed and wishing you had smoother skin, longer legs and smaller feet and then Mario comes in and, in that charming way, he takes you by the hand and says, 'Don’t worry it’s going to be amazing.'"

And Testino is convinced he's able to win over his female subjects because they trust him to make the images look tasteful.

He adds, "I said to her, 'I want you to pose nude for this exhibition.' And she was like, 'Oh, OK, Mario.' She said yes right away. Most of them (celebrity friends), I think, trust me. I would never let them down."

Todo o Nada opens in Rome in July (11).

Angelina Jolie discusses her take on Cleopatra

Angelina Jolie has spoken out about her approach to playing Cleopatra in a big screen version of the Egyptian queen’s life.

Cleopatra has often been considered a legendary beauty – not least thanks to Elizabeth Taylor’s glamorous turn as the young queen in the Oscar-winning 1963 film.

But Jolie wants to approach the monarch from a different angle.

“She has been very misunderstood,” Jolie tells Stella Magazine. “I thought it was all about the glamour, but then I read about her and she was a very strong mother, she spoke five languages and she was a leader.

“My performance will never be as lovely as Elizabeth's. We are trying to get into a different truth about her as a pharaoh in history and not a sex symbol, because she really wasn't.

“Even this idea of her having many lovers - it was possible that it was only two. She is very interesting, but she wasn't a great beauty.”

The film will be based on the novel Queen Of the Nile: Cleopatra, A Life, and is due out in 2013. There is currently no director attached, though Jolie is keen on David Fincher.

Those who've seen Jolie in the flesh can attest that she herself is a "great beauty", so it'll be interesting to see how she plays that down as Cleopatra. Uglification, anyone?
